Chapter 24

Day 63-Residential Quarter

Mavis doesn’t have the usual breakfast cooking when Tallia and I leave the tent. Deciding to eat rations rather than wait for food to cook, we pull some jerky and bread out. Sitting by the fire, we chew the dry food and wait for the others. Averick is the next person, coming out of Nala and Amber’s tent, of all places. Giving him a curious look, he shakes his head before walking over.

He starts to explain, “I slept in their tent last night, since Mavis was with Maple. The girls should be out shortly.” Seeing how we are already eating, he leaves to grab his own rations.

As he rejoins us, the girls are leaving their tent. Nala notices us eating already and pulls Amber with her to grab some food. Once they join us, we sit in quiet as the cries of the dead end for the day. Mavis leaves Maple’s tent as the last cry fades.

Looking up to Selphy, she waves to get her attention. “Selphy, can I borrow you for a minute?”

Selphy looks unsure for a moment before floating down from the watch tower. “How can I help you, Mavis?” she asks.

“There’s something in Maple’s tent I could use your help with.” Mavis turns and opens the flap for Selphy to enter.

The party shares a look, as our minds come up with reasons for the odd moment. As we are about to talk about Maple, the tent reopens and Mavis and Selphy join us. Mavis receives a lot of questioning looks, but waves them away while getting her own food.

“Maple had an accident last night.” Mavis doesn’t need to explain further as we catch on.

Looks of sympathy turn towards the tent, and Mavis sits to eat. Shaking her head, we start up our discussion once more. Nala is taking the day to spend with Maple and as she finishes eating, she grabs another helping and enters Maple’s tent to feed her.

“I hope Maple will be okay,” Amber says.

Mavis shakes her head. “It was really bad last night. She would scream at times, while crying at others. We don’t have anything that can help her sleep soundly, either.”

“We found an apothecary yesterday. Do you think they will have something?” I ask.

“Maybe,” Mavis starts. “I could check it out. If some of the plants are still growing, I might be able to mix something up.”

“Good idea,” Tallia says before leaving to grab her gear.

Seeing how she is getting ready triggers the others. Soon, everyone is getting their armor on. Mavis peeks into Maple’s tent to tell them we are leaving. Once everyone is ready, we decide on a plan. We still need to clear the few buildings left on the East side of the quarter, and my party was pulled from our last building on the West side.

Tallia takes the lead with Mavis beside her. Amber is in the middle so her Static Discharge can work to its full effect. Averick and I take up the rear, talking on occasion about the architecture.
